Note: To round out his childhood/family backstory, I usually take from some more obscure comic references where his mother is dead and his father basically ignored and emotionally neglected him, leading to his obsession with needing attention. He escaped by watching movies and playing with practical special effects as a child. Please let me know if this is acceptable to use here. It is all compatible with his film counterpart and doesn't contradict his personality. It actually explains quite a lot of why he is the way he is and exploring it may be a big part of his further development. It just wasn't confirmed in the film canon itself but it is in his comic version.

CRAU History and Impact: n/a

Personality:

"I created Mysterio to give the world someone to believe in. I control the truth. Mysterio is the truth!"

Essentially, Quentin Beck is a delusional asshole with a hero complex.

Beck can be a lot of things. Often, he's putting on an act to get what he wants. He can seem to be kind, friendly; even soothing and caring. He can be very convincing in the part, with a natural charisma and effortless charm. For his own ends, he will befriend or team up with others - such as Spider-Man or his own group of disgruntled ex-Stark employees - only to quickly threaten (e.g. weapons drone aiming at the group's heads when he's mad) or turn on them violently if they get in the way of his grandiose plans (e.g. confusing Spider-Man with illusions so that he steps on train tracks and gets hit by a train; attempting to shoot him in the head). When he puts on the act of the heroic version of Mysterio, he is what he wants people to see: a tragic interdimensional warrior who lost his family and his world and now wants to save another Earth in the multiverse. There's something of a caring uncle or supportive brother in his spin on the helpful hero.

But really, he's a manipulative con artist and a liar. Inside, Beck is unstable, delusional, deceptive, devious, bitter, petty and all he wants is recognition and for people to listen to him. He's egotistical and he puts on a big show, both in his speeches and in his illusions. He's felt underappreciated and overlooked in his life and his work (e.g. insulted and fired by Tony Stark) - his technology of which he is very proud. Believing himself to be the smartest one on the room, he feels he and his work are superior and need to be heard and he'll do anything to achieve that goal - including mass manipulations and inventing fake terrors - but actually destroying whole villages and parts of cities. He'll even dismiss multiple casualties as all what needs to be done to put him in the position he feels he deserves.

It goes without saying that, even without superpowers, Beck is a dangerous person. His mind is sharp and highly intelligent and he really can create incredibly advanced technology - but he shows many of the signs of a sociopath, with all his manipulations; callous lack of true empathy; and bitter rage at what he sees as the world acting unjustly toward himself.

Yet he would not see himself as the villain. He feels he has to do what he does. Such as if he steers somebody away from the danger and they step back into it - then it's their fault and they deserve what's coming to them. They 'brought it upon themselves' and he arrogantly in no way blames himself, even if he is the one then attempting to kill them.

So basically, pleasant on the outside but seething with rottenness inside. Quentin Beck simply cannot be trusted.

He exists in a morally grey area. On one hand, he could do a lot of good and if he leans more toward striving to help people with his technology then he could be the hero he manufactures. But as he sways more toward selfishness, other people become less people and more pawns that he uses to boost himself up. So he is very quick to go morally dark, even as he himself considers it is for the greater good of his own ends. He justifies all of this by thinking that he is always in the right and that he knows what's best, for the individual or for the world.

If the above mentioned comic background can be utilized then his fears and insecurities are well founded and explained. He was a shy and lonely boy, raised by a father who either called his son worthless or completely ignored him. Often the father would speak to the figment of his dead wife, Beck's mother, and proclaim how useless their son was. This wore the child down, giving him a craving for attention elsewhere. At first he only had himself and his escapism in movies. He would recreate scenes and play them out with his toys. His uncle that he rarely saw gave him a video camera, but this was eventually smashed by his father, who thought that this would all amount to nothing. All of this has lingered and formed the adult Quentin Beck who overcompensates with his ambition and ego. Of course he doesn't ever want to be reminded of the lonely, sad boy he had been and will avoid thinking about it. Being confronted with it would be even worse.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:

Beck is a regular human being - despite the persona he attempts to project. It's all special effects fakery and lies. His actual powers are:

Genius intellect: Beck is clever, crafty and intelligent, especially when it comes to technology and manipulating or fooling others. He is a perfectionist who plans every detail yet can also think quickly and adapt plans on the spot when something unexpected happens. However, it's a very flawed intelligence with many black spots and narrow-mindedness and a huge ego overshadowing his sense of reason, much to his own detriment at times (such as emotionally ordering drones to fire when he's just been warned he's in danger of being in the firing line).

Tech genius: In a general sense, Beck is a master engineer, scientist, programmer, designer and computer effects wizard. His most prominent invention is:

Illusion Tech: Beck created a revolutionary holographic system that not only can project very vivid and convincing illusions but also can tap into the brain, specifically "hijacking" (to use Tony Stark's word from Civil War when he demonstrated the tech, renamed there as B.A.R.F. - to Beck's disgust) the hippocampus and this in turn draws upon memories and emotions to directly affect the subject, tapping into their dreams or nightmares. It is something that could help or hinder the mind and feelings of the target. This could also be set up and put on display to the world, not only visible in person but also captured on camera and broadcast to the world as reality. It was a sophisticated system, coupled with drone technology to make it even more realistic by causing damage when necessary to sell the illusion.

Note on the tech for in-game use: It runs on electricity, batteries and what he will have brought in with him. He's smart enough to recreate it, if necessary, or adapt it from available in-game tech. It will not simply randomly grab anyone's memories and thoughts. He'd have to make calculations and adjust things and of course this will only be done with OOC permissions. If this has to be eliminated, nerfed or warped, I can do that but it isn't overly powerful unless he has some full access to people's brains. Most can probably not be affected, unless they are particularly vulnerable and he's targeting then directly - for good or for ill.
